Building
The building housing the telescope is an octagonal shape with a 6-metre diameter and a double-layered roof that can be opened.

The Telescope
The main instrument of the Monte Lema observatory is the reflecting telescope which has a diameter of 410 mm in a Cassegrain optical configuration with three focal ratios :F:10 - F:5 - F:3 (primary focus). The change of focal ratio takes place with the replacement of the rear section of the tube and the subsequent substitution of the secondary mirror. For the ratio F:5 it is necessary to insert a correcting group. The optics are made in ceramic glass and housed in a fiber-glass tube fitted on an equatorial mounting with telescopic fork, the movements of which are controlled both locally and remotely by means of a computer. The software enables the automatic tracking of the celestial objects.
  •
  • A racket that contains a microprocessor to enter into the data base of the internal computer where all of the main objects are catalogued and recorded (Messier, NGC, IC, etc….) used to carry out the automatic sighting thereof.
  •
  • An external computer enables the operator to carry out the sighting and tracking by means of a type of planetary program (The Sky, Guide 8.0). By clicking the object that the operator would like to observe on the screen, the telescope makes all of the necessary movements in a very precise way to position itself on the object selected (star, nebula, galaxy or other), taking advantage of all the potentials contained in the database in this way.

    Other Available Functions
  •
  • Drawing out of time on both of the axes to compensate for the apparent sidereal movement, whether solar or lunar, with automatic commutation of the speed at 10 from the object (Sun and Moon).
  •
  • Sighting and tracking of the catalogued objects is carried out automatically or with digitalized coordinates of the celestial bodies (equatorial and altazimuth).
  •
  • Compensation of the mechanical flexion, precessions, nutations and atmospheric refractions.
  •
  • Parking of the telescope, maintaining and housing the coordinates of the parking position in its memory bank even after shut-off.
  •
  • Automatic piloting by means of an external CCD.
  •
  • Remote control of the instrument's sighting and/or tracking and filming of the CCD images.

    Focal Instrumentation.
Set of telescopic eye-pieces Super Plossl Masuyama with 50 mm and 31,8 mm diameters.
    Camera CCD Hi-Sis 33 with Thomson sensors 512 x 512 pixels.
